BWD: Magmaw

Blackwing “Wait Didn’t I Kill Nef Already?” Descent: Magmaw

Note:
I have now done this fight!  We have even killed him!  You can check out my “lol instructional video” here.  Done with captions because I am a nub with a  broken mic.  ETA: Apparently that vid spazzes out at one point, showing a still until the kiting segment.  I have no idea why, as all I did to make our plain kill video was remove the captions and the kiting part and kill video works fine, but I’ll see about fixing it.  In the meantime, the link to the less fubar’d, but non-captioned, video is here.

Basic Concepts:

  • Don’t stand in bad (pst, fire is bad)
  • GROUP HUG
  • Multiple phases
  • AAADDS!  AAADDS!

Tank
Guess what!  The boss doesn’t move.  Stand there and mock your kiter during the first part.   Of course, during the transition, the boss is eating you, so…yeah.  After a few stacks of mangle you might want to pop a cool down.  And not mock the kiter so much.

At the end of phase 2, threat is wiped, so you want to reestablish that quickly before your melee does something stupid like tank it for you.

Healer
Hug your ranged DPS and fill green bars.  Move with the group away from pillar of fire.  Weep at the AoE damage.   When the tank is being OMNOMNOM’d during the transition, toss him some extra heals.

DPS
One of you is going to be the kite bitch.  Hunters are naturally pro at this, but DKs with Chillblains are a popular choice right now as well.  Any class that can slow/knock back/teleport/get really fucking creative can pull this off as well.  See: kite bitch section below.

The rest of you (sans melee) will be basically shuffling from one designated spot to another as the boss tosses down a pillar of burning badness every 30 seconds.  If you’re slow you’ll get knocked in the air by the pilalr so don’t be fucking slow.

Killing the adds seems to be the preferred method, so ranged DPS should burn those down.  Just make sure all DPS (and cooldowns are blown) are on the boss when he’s impaled, which is phase 2.

There is a boss ability named ignition.  It covers half the room and looks like steam jets, so don’t stand in it.  Duh.

Two DPS will have to chain the poss during the transition phase.  Jump on his head and use Constricting Chains.  Don’t have your best add burners do this as they’ll still need to be killing those damn worms.  If you’re breaking the chains you’re fucking it up so…uh…don’t do…whatever you’re doing.

At the end of phase two the boss drops threat.  Don’t be stupid.

Kite Bitch
Worms spawn from the pillar of flame.  Grab them and run around like a headless chicken.   MANY WORMS, HANDLE THEM.  No I don’t know why this really got its own section either.  I felt like it, okay?

AHAHAHA we were laughing SO HARD last night on this fight. It made the wipes OH SO worthwhile.

First, I noted that “we’re ARE staring at a giant worm guys…”

“My shaman has a huge worm shoved in her mouth…”

“Guys, get out of the bad stuff before it explodes all over you…”

“Dude, Magmaw just killed me with his fire splooge”

“He’s AOEing all over me ughhhh”

    And the hilarity ensued.

On one pull, I was laughing so hard, my eyes were watering, and I couldn’t hold my mouse steady enough to hover over boxes so I was just mashing buttons wildly in hopes I would heal SOMEONE.

    Ahhhh I love this boss.

It’s really important that the adds NOT get into melee range of whoever they are after, as they will spawn MOAR ADDS and it will just spiral out of control from there! As a Frost DK, I hit them with all the Howling Blasts I can when they spawn, then turn back to the boss and use my other runes while they slowly squirm towards me. Then when Howling Blast is ready again I turn around and hit any that are left. Unless there’s almost none, in which case I save it for the next add phase.

Also…while running back & forth between adds/Magmaw, don’t run off the edge into the lava. >_>

Well, it doesn’t look like a penis any longer… but it does look like a sock puppet. So… improvement?

On 10 man we used 4 healers, 1 tank, 5 dps.

We had everyone except the kiter stand within melee range of the boss… really really close, that meant that the lava spouts only bothered the kiter who could concentrate on that and our healers and dps didn’t have to move so much. We stood to the left of him but only just so we could move quickly before the steam came. The only caveat to this is after the exposed head phase tank has no aggro so you gotta stay a bit away from him until the tank gets aggro again.

We 4 healed it because the 4th healer was slightly undergeared for the fight anyway and we had him help out with the chains. We had a DK for our kiter, the only catch was since we were stacking our healers in melee range when he was kiting he had to remain somewhat close to stay in range of heals.

    Overall it worked out well.

My husband was working on this boss with his 10 man group recently. A mage, who happened to be a meter-whore extraordinaire, didn’t move in time because he was finishing a spell trying to be all “leet” even though he was behind like 4 other people on the meter. Therefore, he got the debuff from an add, and in order to avoid looking like he was the one spawning the adds because he screwed up, he blinked…right off the edge to his death. I really wish I could have witnessed it! (I hate that guy.)

Put the healers with the melee, let the ranged take care of the adds. This way there is less people that can screw up with the pillar.

3 healers 1 tank 2 melee and 4 ranged and youre sorted. (if melee doesnt dps from the side when magmaw is down)

Our guild defeated him just this past Tuesday. We run ranged heavy as it is, so we had 1 tank (pally), 2 melee (one our DK tank in his offspec), 3 healers (Holy Priest, Shaman and Pally), and 4 ranged dps. Hoping for a repeat kill next week.

I’m just glad we didn’t have any dick jokes flying the other night. That would have made killing the squirming, multiplying, and all around slimy adds even tougher.

We run 2 heals (druid/pally), 2 tanks (DK/Pally), and a hunter standing at range to catch the fire pillars. Everyone stacks left, with the tank on the right. Makes it really manageable and straightforward to heal. We swap HoSac on the tanks, and the extra ranged standing in melee nukes the adds while the SV hunter keeps them trapped/slowed.

    lol nice guide !

I always seem to be the one who gets that stoopid stun when u get too close to him on mangle.

That’s right melee “Chain the poss”. New warcry.

Great, now that you’ve said that Magmaw is like a giant red penis, I cannot unsee it. Maybe if I soak my eyeballs in bleach…

Barring that, your strategy made me choke with laughter. The writing was amusing, but the strategy is sound!

I like the way you describe the fight! <3
On 25 man in our 1st kill we managed to make the achievement also. Pretty simple fight, only a few wipes needed.

Here is a guide i wrote about Blackwing Descent: Blackwing Descent Tactics and Strategy Guide

If the chains are getting broken, make sure that both chains are grabbed at the same time. … Or, just continue to swear at your melee, that works too
