Here’s MY Speculation

Blah blah blah, MMO champion, “reliable” sources, spoilers, blah blah.

…night elf mages?

What the HELL?

Oh why don’t you just fuck lore up the ass without lube why don’t you?

I mean I wanted Tauren priests, sure, but…   /splutters

/crosses her arms

This had better be either a total load of shit, or Blizzard had better whip some really good explanations up.

Holy cow is the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw this stuff posted…

Oh, and troll tree droods will actually be marijuana plants…

    For The Alliance!

  4. #4 by Antigen on August 17, 2009 - 2:17 pm

I, too, hope this is a TERRIBLE joke that Blizzard is playing. Being a bit of a lore nerd, I can think of reasons why 90% of the new class/race combinations shouldn’t exist. I just didn’t make a post about it because I doubt I could control the anger.

  5. #5 by Isa on August 17, 2009 - 2:19 pm

I think that’s one of the more plausible things in that set of rumors, actually. I mean, I won’t believe any of it until I see some confirmation…but Nelves _were_ the original mages. Yeah, arcane stuff is why the Nelves and High elves split in the first place, but they’ve been working with arcane users within the Alliance for awhile now. Plus, many living Nelves may have actually been around before the Sundering and used arcane magic before. And overall, I can see the loss of immortality making Nelves more reckless.

  6. #6 by kyrilean on August 17, 2009 - 2:28 pm

It concerns me that a lot of focus is on expansion stuff when Icecrown hasn’t even hit. To me that spells boredom and WoW having hit it’s peak and will begin it’s slow fall to the end.

  7. #7 by Ambrosyne on August 17, 2009 - 2:32 pm

Isa – considering the FIT they pitched at the idea of using arcane magic before, I consider it strange that they’d suddenly be like, “Aw, nah, s’okay.”

Maybe that’s what causes the cataclsym…night elf mages. Then the other collective races stomp over there and go GO DAMN IT NELFS DIDN’T YOU LEARN LAST TIME.

    The end.

  8. #8 by Light on August 17, 2009 - 2:43 pm

    WTB draenei warlock :)

Though, the night elves did start off as mages. Highborne and all. I can’t see them accepting it again though.

  9. #9 by Ambrosyne on August 17, 2009 - 2:47 pm

@Light – that’s the thing, it went SO WRONG before.

I also want an explanation of Tauren paladins. Priests….ooookay, but paladins? Paladins. Really. How? Though I guess if they have one, they can have the other…

…except that would open up UD pallys, bleh!

And the Earthmother said lo, the sun is my eye, and as I shine the Light down upon you, so shall you embrace and worship it…all are one who walk upon the earth…

  10. #10 by Mikata on August 17, 2009 - 2:49 pm

I would just like to point out,

that I really REALLY doubt nelfs, after all the bullshit they had to deal with in the past, would just overlook thier traditions, throw away thier teachings, and be like… “meh, we’re not getting our immortality back… and the sourge isn’t going away no matter how many times we kill them every week…. WHY THE FUCK NOT!?!?! Let’s just fuck everything up again.”

Yeah… I just think too many people who don’t pay two shits to lore are just QQing right in Blizz’s ear because they want to play a specific class with a pretty/cool race. “Oooooh… omgomgomg…. look at the ELF!! She’s got PINK HAIR, OMFG!!!! And she shoots LAZER BEAMZZ of FIRE!!!”

  11. #11 by Forreststump on August 17, 2009 - 2:50 pm

Piousangus. Name is reserved for future use. Except, I think the Holy tree should be eliminated entirely for Tauren paladins – I mean, really… Huge, imposing, plate-wearing… Standing in the back?

  12. #12 by Ambrosyne on August 17, 2009 - 2:57 pm

@Forreststump – they’ll be back there with the moocow priests! >.>

  13. #13 by Prot on August 17, 2009 - 3:38 pm

Okay, the Priest Tauren is a possibility. There is new dialogue on the Horde side that supports some Tauren start to study the sun magics instead of just focusing on Elune and the moon magics. So, transalte Sun into THE LIGHT and you could get Tauren Priest/Paladins. Which will drive me nuts because I will have to reroll my Belf Paly into a Tauren.

As for NElf Mages, supposedly already on the 3.2.2 PTR there is a similar dialgue suggesting they return to their arcane roots. Something about about a particular family of NElf’s coming and talking to them.

Some of the other stuff though sounds pretty cool, like a flooded 1k Needles. And Worgen and Goblins. I could see Goblins getting +10 to Engineering.

  14. #14 by Zalgosh on August 17, 2009 - 4:06 pm

@Ambrosyne – actually UD Pallies makes a hell of a lot more sense than Tauren pallies, and has confused me why they haven’t been in since the start. Let’s say a human paladin got raped by the scourge or plague or w/e they did to Tirisfal Glades and turned undead, then eventually broke free of the Lich King. They suddenly remember everything about themselves. Just because they are The Forsaken doesn’t mean they forsake the light or lose their faith, it wasn’t their choice to become undead.

Of course, I look forward to Tauren priests and pallies. If that happens, then I am so going to have taurens out the ass on my character screen. Shaman, druid, warrior, hunter, dk, priest, pally. Just gotta wait on them to make tauren rogues, warlocks and mages available too.

  15. #15 by Armagon on August 17, 2009 - 4:09 pm

Actually I’m only pissed because I already got one of each class and race. And sometimes I would have loved to choose one of the newly announces races for that class.. /wrist.
    ESPECIALLY my Paladin.

  16. #16 by Ambrosyne on August 17, 2009 - 4:14 pm

@Armagon – that’s an issue I’ve had with several of my vanilla toons that would be draenei if only they’d existed, then. Even my iconic paladin likely would have been a space goat. My hunter certainly would have!

  18. #18 by Armagon on August 17, 2009 - 6:12 pm

hehe, and I have too many Blood Elves.
Warlock – hey, a new race. BE female to 70
Priest – I have a Troll, I hate Undead, ok. Male BE.
Paladin – *hates BE* – Oh wait, no other choice.

  19. #19 by Nyctef on August 17, 2009 - 6:12 pm

Sounds like night elves would need a pretty good reason to revisit the arcane arts. Maybe something as dramatic as a cataclysm?

    Hang on a moment..

  20. #20 by Ron on August 17, 2009 - 7:00 pm

To quote a funny line I read when in a lore discussion: “LOL… Lore. Raid more noob”.

Honestly, who cares? The game is entering its twilight years and Blizzard is attempting to bring some people back or keep existing players longer by offering new race/class combos. When you run around killing rabbits or critters you don’t think to yourself “would a NE really do this?”… No. You do it because you feel like it or because it’s fun.

This move will not make people quit the game but it *may* bring some folks back or prolong the interest of current players. It’s a smart move for the sake of the game as a whole and if it results in additional cash flow you may see another expansion or two before it’s all over. It’s win/win for both sides.

  21. #21 by Ambrosyne on August 17, 2009 - 7:48 pm

Screw you and your logic, Ron.

Story is actually important and if they trash it totally, there is a segment that will leave. Or at l east be pretty damn unhappy, which leads to leaving eventually.

  22. #22 by Magejuego on August 17, 2009 - 8:37 pm

Or just bitch about it on their blogs.

  23. #23 by Worldmage on August 17, 2009 - 9:50 pm

To everyone QQing about the lore and NElf mages, I have one word for you: Shen’dralar. They’re Highborn mages living in Dire Maul who have been in the game since the beginning.

  24. #24 by Worldmage on August 17, 2009 - 10:03 pm

It’s also worth pointing out that the lore isn’t a static thing. WoW is part of a dynamic story, and change is inevitable when the world itself is changing so much. It might be that the Highborne are allowed into the Alliance over the objections of the NElf leadership, possibly because of the consequences of the coming Cataclysm. There’s all sorts of reasons why they might become playable.

Personally, I’m more disturbed by the idea of Troll Druids. That would require a MUCH bigger lore justification than NElf mages. At least NElf mages have some sort of precedent backing them up. It would also annoy me because that would mean Alliance have fewer possible races for druids than Horde, which would compound the stupidity.

  25. #25 by Earantur on August 17, 2009 - 11:26 pm

@forreststump – if your holy palas are standing at the back, they’re missing out on a wonderful regen source (aka seal of wisdom).

@worldmage – High Priest Venoxis, High Priestess Jeklik, High Priestess Mar’li, High Priest Thekal, High Priestess Arlokk, Moorabi and Gal’Darah would all like a word with you. Also Worgen are likely to be druids.

  26. #26 by Worldmage on August 18, 2009 - 3:09 am

@Earantur, I thought all those were supposed to be Witchdoctors, not druids. And why do you think Worgen are likely to be druids? If they were it would ease my annoyance some, but I see scarce little lore to back it up except that they’re all tied to the Scythe of Elune, which is tied to Elune, who is the patron of NElves, who are druidic. But still, the most likely source of playable Worgen is the country of Gilneas, who were all human and therefore not druidic.

  27. #27 by Prot on August 18, 2009 - 10:08 am

Hmmm.. Human Druids? Why not? Do you think Humans are too corrupt to deal with the earth mother?

As of right now there is only one race that can be druids. It is pretty weak. And on Horde side wealso are stuck with only one race who can be paladins. So, Horde is made up of a bunch of Taurens and Blood Elves because we don’t have many options. Not that Alliance have it much easier with only one race who can be shamans. But, who wants to be a shaman anyways? If you gave Blood Lust to Rogues then no one would roll shamans. ;-)

  28. #28 by Ambrosyne on August 18, 2009 - 10:15 am

@Worldmage – Yes, there are highborne mages…living in exile.

I’m not saying that I don’t want night elf mages, or that I’ll be terribly upset by supposed class/race combinations-I’m saying that I’ll be upset if there’s not GOOD REASON provided.

If Blizzard paints us a pretty story that doesn’t seem totally half-assed, then I’m fine with night elf mages and anything else. I just want lore behind it that makes some god damned sense. I know lore isn’t static but I’m afraid of them mucking it up!

  29. #29 by Dorgol on August 18, 2009 - 12:18 pm

Troll “Druids” won’t be Cenarian Druids.

Maybe they will be called Witch Doctors. Maybe they will be called Animists. Maybe they will be called something else at random. The point, though, is that they will have a unique Lore background that works, but have a gameplay that is identical to Druids.

The fun part is imaging what their forms would be. Think about what forms we’ve seen in ZA, ZG, Gundrak:

Snake (ZG), Spider (ZG), Panther (ZG), Tiger (ZG), Lynx (ZA), Bear (ZA), Bat (ZG), Rhino (GD)… all of these could be options for the Troll Druid.

Bear could become a Rhino (as if the pets weren’t bad enough).
Cat could become a Lynx or Panther).
    Walrus could become a Snake.
    Moonkin and Tree… dunno.
Flight form would be a BAT. A BAT! I don’t care what else they get… a bat would be all win.

  30. #30 by Worldmage on August 18, 2009 - 2:19 pm

@Prot, It’s not a matter of them being too corrupt, it’s a simple cultural thing. Humans just aren’t close enough to nature to be druids. The only other Alliance race I could even see coming close to druidism are dwarves, because of the Wildhammer’s shamanistic culture. Maaaybe the Draenei too, though that doesn’t work quite as well for me for some reason. With all their advanced technology they don’t strike me as being all that close to nature either.

@Ambrosyne, considering they’re already starting to seed the upcoming storyline about it (there’s a new quest coming in 3.2.2 that deals with it, in case you haven’t heard; there’s a transcript of the cutscene involved in the WoWWiki entry on the Shen’dralar if you wanna go look), I don’t think you have much to worry about in that respect. ;)

@Dorgol, while that would be awesome beyond belief, I somehow doubt that they’ll get their own forms. As far as we know, there isn’t any form of Druidism besides Cenarian (even the furbolgs were taught by the NElves), and as I said there’s absolutely no lore justification for there being one. Witchdoctors and Animists use spirits, just like Shamans, so they’re more like Shamans with a few extra tricks up their sleeves than Druids. It would also be hard to explain how non-NElf-trained Druids wound up with moon-based powers. The trolls don’t really have any connection to Elune on their own. The only way I can see it working is if Tauren started teaching it to them to get them away from Voodoo, but so far there hasn’t been any hint of them doing so. Doesn’t mean there won’t be, but it makes it less likely since Blizz is getting in the habit of seeding upcoming storylines so major changes like that don’t just come out of nowhere.
