Your Level 1 Self

There was a Breakfast Topic on WoW Insider on Friday that intriqued me.  “What would you tell your Level 1 self?”

Oh…so many things.

Dear level 1 self,

Don’t level holy.  I know you love to help people, and you will be a good healer later in your toon’s life, but it’s vanilla sweetie.  It’s going to take you over a year to get to 60 at this rate.  Paladin healing at this stage of the game is not so complicated that you need to level that way to learn it.  Just stand there and push flash heal at 60 and look cute, okay?

There are also things called blogs, and other resources beyond thottbott.

That must be the most awesome thing I’ve read all day. So true too. Guess I’d have to tell myself that maybe I shouldn’t start any guilds when I grow up and leave it to the professionals :p

    “over a year”…

    *checks WarcraftRealms*…

About 19 months. Can I just say that it felt longer?

60 to 70 only took almost a year. I’d say I’ve learned my lesson, but 80 only took about two months. And since our spell book is exploding for Cataclysm, you can bet I’ll be leveling Holy to 85 as well.

Dear God… you had to rely on thottbot? You poor misguided creature. No WONDER it took you over a year to get from 1-60 (even in Vanilla that seems long). But levelling a pally in Vanilla.. From what I hear there was no “good” spec to level as. Ret did zero damage and prot was lolprot… so you didn’t have much of a choice other than sitting there attempting to level for long periods of time.

Personally, I would take my new and shiny level 1 and take him into Anvilmar, sit him in front of the fire and have a long talk with him. The conversation would touch on many things and would last into the night covering such topics as…

    – “Youngling, log out and delete your hunter. Just… just do it. Having a dwarf with a gun is not nearly as cool as you think it’s going to be. You are really going to enjoy healing. Seriously, DPS is for suckers. Go get yourself a Priest or a Pally and thank me later”
    – “Same thing goes for a Gnome Warrior. The thought of a Gnome in 2 tons of armor is funny, but it’s gonna get hold. Oh, and Tailoring seriously is a stupid idea for a warrior. Really. You can buy all the bags you want on the auction house.”
    – “Don’t be scared of dungeons and groups. Yes you’re new and have no idea what you’re doing, but everyone else was there at one point. You’re going to make mistakes and you’ll embarrass yourself occasionally, but you’ll learn faster and there are lots of people who will be willing to help you out. This ain’t a single player game, buddy”
    – “Kill any horde warlock on site. Kill the Alliance ones too if you can figure out how.”
    – “Wow is fun when you play it drunk. Do this often.”
    – “Oh, that thing you told your wife about not letting yourself get addicted to this game… yaaaaah… you’re wrong. You might as well apologize to her now and get it over with. And she will never play it with you, so don’t bother trying.”

I’m sure it would end up with both of us drunk, singing Dwarven drinking songs in front of the fire. I would not want to be either of me the next morning.

    Great topic!

The obvious answer would be to tell myself to cancel the account and not bother playing. I’ve met some great people and had a lot of fun times over the years but in retrospect, 200+ days dedicated to a repetitive game with no end seems a bit ridiculous. And to think of all the EQ folks I joked about before WoW consumed me… such I hypocrite the game turned me into.

But since I know my level 1 self would never listen to that, the best piece of advice would be not leveling the priest to 60 as Holy. While the intention was good, I rarely dungeon grinded with my group of RL friends and as a result often found myself drinking to regen mana more than soloing/questing. This killed a lot of the joy of leveling my first character.

Get your own account, don’t roll a balance druid (it is the worst spec in the game until they update the druid talents, and you never figure out how to play it in classic anyway).

  7. #7 by Nzete on October 4, 2010 - 7:02 pm

When you roll a druid alt, she should take up mining and herbalism as a gathering toon… seriously, gathering birdies are completely OP. Do not become a skinner/leatherworker to make your own armour. The coolness factor is overrated there, little druidess.

And by the way, priestess, as cool as divine spirit (with bonus spellpower is) discipline is not a respectable pve healing spec.

    Dear level one self,

Quit this game. Just do it. It will consume hours upon days upon years of your life. You can go earn a Nobel or something in the time you would have put into it.

Because you didn’t listen to me, ditch that rogue. You’ll end up hating the combo point system. Roll a druid. Not only will you skip dreaming about it until the end of the first expansion, you’ll find something inexplicably appealing about making people glow green. No, I still don’t know why. If taht doesn’t convince you, the other amazing reason to roll a druid is [spoilers] BEING A SPACE CHICKEN.

    kthx,
    Level eighty self

If there was only one piece of advice that I could give it would be –

There is an easier way to Ironforge.

Dear level 1 self, don’t try to do everything right from the start. There is still so much to learn, so many mistakes to be made and so much fun to be had. Also, go see a trainer and stop spamming that auto-attack ability; we call it ‘global cooldown’.

Here are 4 bags and 5 gold.

Dear level 1 Alt. Save yourself years of self-reincrimination for not eking out that 1 percent DPS extra. Save yourself the trouble for not studying that WWS log back in the day, for catching DPS downtime. Quit so you can still be with that cute lady from work..

    So much to say.

    Dear lvl 1 self,

    A) roll paladin from day 1. You were made to pound stuff.
    B) roll on Argent Dawn and find a guy named Medros; no, do NOT waste your time with AIE.
    C) ret paladin to start, cause later, you’ll get dual spec. it doesn’t do much.
    D) DO NOT STAND IN THE FOLLOWING: Water, sludge, slime, fire or any variation of the preceding. You’ll thank me later.
    E) Most importantly? Have fun!

    Love,

    Future You.

Ahh… I leveled my pally as holy till about level 40 in vanilla (where it was one of my many many alts – and I did it at least three times on different realms) – it was slow, it was autoattack, but I couldn’t die. I had no thought about healing or whatever in dungeons, just remember reading the tips for Spiritual Focus – no pushback for my healing spells = win!

Then I joined the overpowered ret world from 40-60 when 3.0 hit… and then back to holy till 68 to heal dungeons… before dual specs hit.

Dear level one self… dual wielding arms warriors…. that is not your path – arms is set up for a big heavy two hander…

  14. #14 by Tart on October 5, 2010 - 5:13 am

    oh lord, where to start…

Dear Level 1 Tart (who oddly was NOT named tart!):

Delete your Warlock. Reroll Priest. Profit.

    <3
    level 80 tart.

    Dear Level 1 Self:

You’re clicking the Paladin button on the character selection. Don’t do it. Pick the druid instead. Level a paladin later.

    Dear Level 1 Self:

Don’t choose a rogue just because your husband did. You’ll never like melee, never. Priest is probably your best bet, though you might want to try a druid one day. Right now, they suck, so it’s probably not a good time. Leveling as a priest is going to be really slow until you get to Burning Crusade. Keep lots of water on hand and try to group with people you know, if you can. Change to holy when you start to heal instances more than anything else. It’s better, I promise. Discipline is ok-ish for now, but it’ll suck in the expansion for a while and then get really good, but be completely different. Shadow is good for leveling, not for grouping. Don’t ever level as discipline or holy: just because you raided as a healer, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to level as one. Respecs don’t cost THAT much.

Skinning makes you a lot of money and maybe you’ll need it, but enchanting is a lot more useful in the long run.

Find someone to help you with the basics of healing. (NOT Purity, he SUCKS at healing. In fact, he really sucks at being a priest. Killing rogues is not as hard as he’s making it out to be, though they are very tough. Start soon and you’ll figure it out.) You’re going to have a very steep learning curve for healing in instances, sorry. Relax, roll holy and be patient. Your husband will get frustrated, but he’s done this sort of game before you and haven’t. (MUDs do not count. Besides, you didn’t know what you were doing in there either.) He’ll NEVER be able to heal nearly as well as you. It’d probably help a LOT if you regularly talked with a good priest about your healing.

Your guild name will never matter as much to you as the people you play with. Join a better guild, even if it means you hate your guild name.

    Cheers,

    Your level 80 self.

  17. #17 by Teidez on October 10, 2010 - 8:40 am

    Dear level 1 self,

Enhance is for dps, resto is for healing. Keep this distinction in mind, and BC will go a lot smoother. As a matter of fact, just delete the shaman and reroll a rogue with the same name. You will never have a toon name you will enjoy as much as Bagheera, and rogues are designed for the dual-wielding dagger style you favor.

On a related note, do not server transfer.Your friend will quit playing about two months later, and she’ll leave you holding the bag. And you’d have to leave behind the name Bagheera, which, as we discussed, is an awesome name. So stick with it, and backstab your way to profit.

Tedeiz (Your second shaman, who will in Wrath will avenge Bagheera against all those bastard Hellfire boars)
